Who Needs Disc Brake Conversion?
While it might seem like a "classic" upgrade, disc brake conversions offer significant benefits for a wide range of vehicles. Here's a closer look at why you might want to make the switch:
1. Classic Car Enhancement:
You're right that classic car owners, especially those with pre-1970s models, often benefit most from disc brake conversions. Before the 1970s, drum brakes were the standard. While some manufacturers like Chrysler introduced disc brakes earlier (in the 1950s), they weren't widely adopted until later. The advent of power brakes in the mid-1960s made disc brakes even more appealing due to their easier operation. A disc brake conversion can significantly improve the stopping power and safety of classic cars.
2. Enhanced Rear Brake Performance:
Even today, many modern vehicles still use drum brakes on the rear wheels. This is primarily a cost-saving measure by manufacturers, as front brakes handle the majority of the braking force (around 70%). However, upgrading to disc brakes in the rear can provide more balanced and responsive braking, especially during heavy braking or when towing.
3. Improved Overall Braking Performance:
Even if your vehicle already has disc brakes, converting to larger rotors, calipers with more pistons, or a more advanced system can significantly enhance braking performance. This translates to shorter stopping distances, reduced brake fade, and increased longevity.
4. Easier Maintenance and Durability:
Disc brakes are generally easier to maintain and more durable than drum brakes. Drum brakes require regular adjustments and are more susceptible to performance issues caused by heat, moisture, and debris. Disc brakes offer more consistent performance and require less frequent maintenance.

Parking brakes
In addition to the low cost of a rear-drum configuration on vehicles, manufacturers also prefer this set up because the mechanism to use the parking is simpler and less expensive with drum brakes than with disc brakes.
With drum brakes, there is a lever controlled by the parking brake cable, which is connected to the brake shoes. With disc brakes, this lever instead is attached to another mechanical device located inside the caliper piston. This device pushes the piston on the pads.
What this means for you is that converting your drum brakes to disc brakes could be complicated by your parking brake system. In some cases, we might need to replace the entire parking brake system because it isn’t compatible with the new disc brakes.
If your parking brake is compatible with your new disc brakes, then all we need to do is disconnect the parking brake before removing the drum brakes. Then, we can simply reconnect the parking brake after the disc brake has been installed.
If we need to replace your vehicle’s parking brake system, we will discuss your options with you before moving forward. We want to make sure your vehicle is safe so that it stops when it needs to.
